前两天看了一部 05 年的老片子，King Kong，我还是第一次看，看的是一区的正版 DVD。King Kong 的视觉较果的确不错，不过总是让我想起 New Concept English 中的一篇讲好莱坞的文章：视频效果的充实掩盖不了内容的空洞，人看起来像人，街道看起来像街道，但是没 humanity inside.

今天重看，争取能够多看懂，听懂一些对白。发现了这么一小段对话：

Carl 想到一个海岛上将未完成的影片完成，于是对投资方说：

I've come into possession of a map. The sole surviving record of an uncharted island. A place that was thought to exist only myth. Until now.

但是投资方对此很不满意：

Investor A：Whoa, Carl, slow down.

Investor B：Is he asking for more money?

Investor C：He's asking us to fund a wild goose chase.

"a wild goose chase"? what this mean? My searching result is list below:

意为：（做）一件无望的事（A hopeless quest.）

出处：这个短语产生的年代比较早，很可能是莎士比亚创造的众多短语中的一个。最早的文字记载出现在1592年的戏剧《罗密欧与朱丽叶》（Romeo and Juliet）当中：

       “Romeo: Switch and spurs, switch and spurs; or I'll cry a match.

         Mercutio: Nay, if thy wits run the wild-goose chase, I have done, for thou hast more of the wild-goose in one of thy wits than, I am sure, I have in my whole five.”

现在这个短语用来表示“（做）一件可能不会有结果的事”；从字面意思看，也是很形象的——抓野鹅的确是一件难事。这个短语的今义与莎士比亚时期的意思有所不同。当时“a wild goose chase”指的是“由一匹领跑的马带领一群马，按照一定的距离排成野鹅飞行时的队形奔跑前行”。与此相关的较早的文字记载出现在1602年Nicholas Breton所著的The Mother's Blessing中：

       “Esteeme a horse, according to his pace, But loose no wagers on a wilde goose chase.”

到19世纪时，“wild goose chase”已经没有上面的这层意思了。在1811年由Grose 所著的Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue中，作者对这个短语的解释与我们今天所说的大体相当：

       “A tedious uncertain pursuit, like the following a flock of wild geese, who are remarkably shy.”

1978年的电影《野鹅敢死队》（The Wild Geese）借用了这个短语作为片名。影片当中，一群雇佣兵接受了一项几乎不可能完成的任务。当然，影片的结局仍然是英雄战胜了敌人，完成了不可能完成的任务。
